I didn’t start in the barbell area
Hey, I’m Kait!
I started like most women do, in the corner of the gym, cycling through dumbbells, doing what I thought I was supposed to do. I was active growing up, and I worked out consistently…but I never really felt like I knew what I was doing.
The barbell?
That felt like a different world.
It wasn’t until university, after I stress fractured my foot and couldn’t run, that everything shifted.
I had no choice but to slow down, rethink my training, and try something new.
That’s when I really started to dive into the barbell.
At first, it felt awkward. Unfamiliar. Intimidating.
But the more I practiced, the more something clicked.
I stopped chasing workouts that made me smaller…
And started training in a way that made me stronger.
Then I found something I had never really seen before: women lifting heavy, building muscle, and not trying to shrink themselves.
They weren’t apologizing for taking up space.
They were owning it.
I didn’t realize it at the time, but that moment changed everything.
What started as “I guess I’ll do more of this since I can’t run.” turned into a complete shift in how I saw training, food, my body, and myself.
I went from:
Working out as punishment → Training as a form of self-respect
Restricting → Fueling
Trying to be smaller → Trying to build
And most importantly…
I stopped feeling like I didn’t belong in the weight room.
That’s why I created Own The Bar.
Because the hardest part isn’t lifting the weight.
It’s walking up to the barbell for the first time and believing you belong there.
This program isn’t just about learning how to squat, bench, or deadlift.
It’s about:
• Stepping out of the corner
• Letting go of the fear of being watched
• Learning a skill instead of guessing your way through workouts
• And becoming the woman who lifts, with confidence
Because confidence doesn’t come before you start.
It comes because you start.
